Thanksgiving!

Hello little Pandas,

This Thursday Americans everywhere will be celebrating Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving is the biggest travel day in America and more people fly, drive, and take trains to be able to celebrate with their families than any other day of the year.

The story of Thanksgiving begins when the Pilgrims sailed to America on a ship called the Mayflower. They sailed from England to escape religious persecution and arrived at Plymouth Rock on the 11th December, 1620. The pilgrims found their first winter in America really hard and although the native Indians helped the Pilgrims , many of them died. In 1621 they had a very good harvest, and the remaining Pilgrims de cided to celebrate with a feast and invited the 91 Indians who had helped them survive the harsh winter. The Governor, William Bradford, sent men so catch wild ducks and geese for the feast,  but we do not know if they had turkey! They didn’t have flour, so there was no bread or pastries, nor was there any milk, cider, potatoes or butter. Instead they ate boiled pumpkin, a type of fried bread made from their corn crop, fish, berries, watercress, lobster, dried fruit, clams, venison, and plums!

In 1941, Thanksgiving was made a legal holiday.

Nowadays, a traditional Thanksgiving dinner will have turkey, stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie with whipped cream on top for dessert!

Each year just before Thanksgiving, the president ‘pardons’ a turkey in a ceremony at the White House, saving that turkey from ending up on someone’s dining table!

Originally the thanksgiving feast was to celebrate the harvest and bring people together. The makers of Panfu have a new game called Oloko in which everyone must work together to grow crops and feed the island. Oloko will be released in English next year. Here are some images so you can see what its all about!

Love and Peace,

Kamaria
